John 3: 22-35

In the gospel of John, it is Jesus’ cousin that is one of the first to be a ‘pointer’ to Jesus. John the baptizer is quite the interesting fellow — known for his unorthodox choice of food (locusts dipped in honey) and even more unorthodox style of dress (donning a closet filled with camel hair attire). Jesus highlights a bit of John’s ‘oddity’ when he asks the crowd — What then did you go out to see? — in reference to people coming out to the Jordan to observe John.

Perhaps John’s greatest ‘oddity’ came in the form of rejoicing in becoming less and less. Here is what John the baptizer says in John 3:

The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. He must increase, but I must decrease.

Camel hair and locust legs we may be able to do without — what we can seek to emulate is a heart that wants less of us and more of Jesus!!

He must increase, but I must decrease.
