John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.

Let’s not miss the strategic placement of this statement in Jesus’ discourse from John 15.

Throughout all the topics Jesus covers in John 15, he keenly threads together the challenging and the exciting.

He begins by calling us to bear fruit, and even shares how God will provide the means through which we can bear much fruit — by pruning us (vs 2) and by abiding in Jesus (vs 4). Within His emphasis on bearing fruit, He also thins the ice surrounding not abiding in Him and the lack of fruit with words like — withers (vs 6) and takes away (vs 2).

He then discusses love and hate — one we are to do, the other we may expect to experience. Our love for one another ought to erupt from our desire to obediently follow His example and His command (vs 12-13). Hate is the word Jesus uses to describe what we may experience from doing the same — following His example and living into His commands.

Threading together the challenging and the exciting.

Some, when they read Jesus’ words in John 15 perseverate on the challenging: the lack of fruit resulting in taking away, the hate and persecution experienced within the journey of following Jesus.

Others seem to have eyes for the exciting: the abiding, the fruit bearing, the love, the asking whatever we wish and it will be done for you (vs 7,16).

My guess is that within the group of followers that were hearing these words from the lips of Jesus that night there was a good mix of both, as there always is.

Perhaps that is why Jesus funnels all of what has been shared into His statement in vs 26 about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit–our Helper and testifier within both the exciting and challenging.

John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
