Genesis 39:21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
There sure are some awesome ‘buts’ in the Bible!
Now the middle-schooler in me sort of grins at that statement; as a follower of Jesus, it stirs up more excitement and anticipation than chuckles.
I rather enjoy finding the ‘buts’ in scripture. Here are a few good ones:
  • Romans 8:10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
  • Acts 2:24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
  • Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
  • Proverbs 18:24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
The ride of Joseph’s life was a bit of a rollercoaster–traversing from pit to pinnacle to pit again. By the time Genesis 39:21 comes around, Joseph finds himself in prison after successfully fending off a barrage of sexual temptation only to be falsely accused of succumbing otherwise.
A prison cell, on the backside of refusing to release his grip on God, seems unfair–at least from our perspective. It is in the midst of that treatment where the ‘but’ gets inserted.
But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.”
God’s presence…
Steadfast love…
Favor…
All come with that one ‘but’ and totally mess up our perspective of fairness!
That is why chuckles quickly get swallowed up with amazement and anticipation.
But the Lord…
