About a third of the way into his sermon, Jesus begins to thread together a handful of topics with a repetitive launch phrase: You have heard that it was said…. but I say to you….
So, Jesus is linking together a group of topics that perhaps had become stale, ignored, limited or even presented incorrectly. You have heard that it was said… but I say to you…
I wonder if somehow these topics had become ‘relaxed’ as that is the word Jesus uses in a sentence just prior to this repetitive-launch-phrase section of his sermon.
Here is how Jesus’ says it:
“Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 4:19 (ESV)
You have heard that it was said… but I say to you…
I wonder what topics Jesus would string together today that have been relaxed, limited, stale or ignored.
Perhaps the very same ones he highlights in His sermon!
Anger – reconciliation
Marriage – faithfulness
Words – integrity
Retaliation – humility
Biasness – compassion
Have any of these become ‘relaxed’ in our lives?
Allow Jesus to speak His words into these areas of our lives. You have heard that it was said… but I say to you…
