Jesus Outside the Walls 3

Jesus Outside the Walls 3

Sunday, June 20, 2021
John 4:3-6 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.
Note the details that set up this event:
  • Jesus is on his way to Galilee and the route takes him through a portion of Samaria.
  • He arrives at a specific town that has a well that is linked to Joseph and Jacob.
  • It is noon and Jesus decides to kick back and rest beside the well.
And now, look at what happens next: John 4:7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”
Jesus strikes up a conversation with a woman who just so happens to come to the well at that exact moment. A moment, mind you, when no one else had ventured to come to the well.

Did Jesus pre-plan his trip to leave Judea just at a certain hour in the morning that would then put him at Sychar right at noon — minutes prior to the woman’s arrival?
Is Jesus’ timing that precise?
I wonder how Peter would answer that question remembering an early morning encounter after a night of empty net fishing. I wonder how the woman in John 8 would answer that question recalling the timing of Jesus that caused stones to drop and a released grip from unforgiveness. I wonder what Zacchaeus would say about Jesus’ timing; and the 10 lepers in Luke 17; and the widowed mother in the funeral procession that is detailed in Luke 7.
I wonder what you would say about Jesus’ entrance into your life?

Can you pause for a moment today and allow yourself to review some of the ‘noon-well’ encounters with Jesus in your own life?

And if there are none, then today can be ‘the day of salvation’ — using Jesus’ words to Zacchaeus (and knowing the end result of the conversation with this woman at the well in John 4!).
Today can be ‘the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2 Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
Today, have that conversation with Jesus…. when He asks to drink some water with you.
