John 15:18-19 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
One of the summer activities that Zach (our youngest son) and I seek to engage in each year is hiking one of the many beautiful mountains in Colorado — especially those that are over 14,000 ft in elevation. Each year they seem to get easier for Zach and much more difficult for me — go figure!!
Prior to hiking each 14’er we definitely check out the different write-ups about the hike on what to expect and the difficulty.
Here is an example of such a write up found on alltrails.com
“The climb up Mt Bierstadt, located in the Mount Evans Wilderness Area, is known as one of Colorado’s iconic 14er routes. Although many people complete it as one of their first 14ers, it is by no means a beginner route and remains a challenge due to its significant elevation gain.”
Other write-ups about the same mountain may describe a steep boulder field as well as a mid-way picturesque area of flowers and foliage. The point being — each hike has its share of beauty and difficulty. Never will you hear me say that these hikes are easy-peasy!
In John 15, when Jesus shares about some of the dynamics of being connected with Him (abiding in Jesus), He doesn’t sugar-coat the journey of a life of faith in Him. In this chapter alone he speaks about the fruit (vs 2), the asking & receiving (vs 7), and presence of the Holy Spirit (vs 26) — all of which are exciting, beautiful and even fun! He also mentions pruning (vs 2), and hatred by the world (vs 19), and persecution (vs 20). This journey will be steep and have its share of boulder fields!
Oh, may we not be guilty of describing the life of faith in Jesus as easy-peasy; nor expecting it to be!
Jesus, may we remain abiding in you throughout all of this tremendous hike of faith in following You!
