Love One Another

John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
The Gospel of John has 21 chapters — five of which are devoted to the activities and teachings that occur on only one evening of Jesus’ life: the evening before the cross. John (being directed by the Holy Spirit) decided that nearly a quarter of his book would concentrate on these words and deeds of Jesus that happened just prior to His arrest in the garden.
Now within these five chapters (John 13-17), three of them have a concentrated focus on love, specifically highlighting:
  • Jesus’ love for his followers
  • Jesus’ love for God
  • Jesus’ desire that we love Him
  • Jesus’ desire that we love each other
‘Desire’ is probably too light of a word in connection with Jesus’ teaching about loving one another — the word He often uses is ‘commandment.’
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
John 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
John 15:17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
John 14:21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
The placement of loving one another is at the level of a commandment.
The pivot of loving one another reveals who we really follow.
The evidence of loving one another is a reflection of our love of Jesus.
Loving one another…
An option in our life? Hardly!
A desire of Jesus for our life?  Yes, and for more!
A means of abiding in Jesus?  Absolutely!
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
God, may we actually love the way You have loved us!
