Genesis 43:16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.”
Joseph planned for the big reveal to include a meal.
Joseph could have revealed his identity to his brothers at any time: at their first arrival when they bowed before him; during the three days they remained in his prison; at the moment of their second arrival. Joseph chooses a meal to be part of the ingredients for their next steps together.
Perhaps meals have been included at significant moments in your life: at weddings, at funerals, at baptisms, at reunions, at birthdays, at anniversaries.
Joseph planned for the big reveal to include a meal.
Here are some other great ‘reveal’ meals found in scripture:
  • Abraham feasting with ‘angels’ where he and Sarah learn about an upcoming pregnancy (Gen 18)
  • Boaz inviting Ruth to eat bread with the reapers (Ruth 2)
  • Israelites eating the passover lamb (Ex 12)
  • Jesus inviting himself over to Zaccheaus’ house for a meal (Lk 19)
  • Jesus eating with Simon the leper (Mk 14)
  • The final meal before the cross (Matt 26)
  • Breakfast with his disciples after Jesus’ resurrection (John 21)
  • Peter eating a meal with gentiles (Acts 11:3)
Many significant events occur in connection with a meal. Even a description of Heaven includes a banquet that will take place at the ‘marriage supper of the Lamb’ (Rev 19).
Jesus’ invitation is this: Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me (Rev 3:20).
May mealtimes always hold that revelatory aspect to them — whether we are with others or when simply dining alone with Jesus!
