Sunday, December 13: Comfortable and Uncomfortable
Luke 1:28-29 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.
Why would a greeting of favor be so uncomfortable?
Why would the affirmation of God being with her cause such ‘great trouble’?
Have you known those who bristle, repel, or disbelieve expressions of favor and affirmation?
Perhaps Mary’s experience is not so foreign to you. Maybe you have known well these thoughts:
Why would God want to be with me?
Why would God want to show favor to me?
Here is some truth that speaks to those very questions:
Jeremiah 31:3 The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.
Because God’s love for us never stops — we cannot stop His kindness!
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Because God created us for Him.
Luke 2:10-11 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
Because the good news and the great joy is for ALL the people.
Because the gift of a Savior was sent to our doorstep.
John 1:12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
Because the opportunity to receive Jesus has not expired.
God favors you! Embrace the comfort in the ‘uncomfortableness’ of being the target of God’s love, kindness and saving Savior!
