An Invitation For More :: The Way

Twenty verses into the sermon (Matt 5:20), Jesus makes this comment about our righteousness:
“For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Five times in some 20 verses Jesus repeats these words: “You have heard that it was said…. But I tell you…”
What do you hear in that phrase?
I hear:
An invitation for a choice:  door #1 = what we have always been told; door #2 = what Jesus tells us
An invitation for an expansion: an expansion of our understanding, focus, and knowledge
An invitation for clear direction: a clearer perspective into the heart of God
An invitation for something better, greater, grander: ‘but I tell you’ opens up a whole new realm
“You have heard that it was said…. But I tell you…”
Not a lecture, not a scolding, not a disciplining, but an invitation to the fullness of kingdom living; with touchpoints like – anger, sexuality, truthfulness, retaliation and love.
An invitation for more.
