We finished week #1 in our IMMERSE: Kingdoms series, reading through the book of Joshua. The Israelites faced many challenges in their Promised Land and the battle isn’t over. We end the book with Joshua’s last command to the people, “choose this day whom you will serve.” (Joshua 24:15)
The people commit to follow the Lord but then we turn a page to the book of Judges where we read story-after-story of Israel’s total failure. It’s a troubling read, but God wants us to learn from our past how easy it is to slip, be misled, and even intentionally walk away from a good relationship with God.
Let’s not forget our past. Remember where we came from, who we are, what we did right and what we did wrong. Throughout the process we see God rescuing His people over-and-over. He is a God of love and salvation. But we have a part to play. We’re not just a bunch of helpless victims.
We finish this week’s reading with the book of Ruth. We are encouraged with a hopeful story of a person of loyalty and faith. We have those stories in our history, too. Those are the ones that we can replay and repeat. How do these stories from long ago inform us about our own lives today? How are those Israelites like this “Christian nation of America”— drifting, disobeying God, denying God? How can we be like Ruth— people of faithfulness and dedication?
