One character in the Christmas story is Joseph, but we don’t know too much about him. He doesn’t get much attention. We know he was a carpenter who lived in Nazareth and he was ‘of the House of David’ which brought Bethlehem into the story because of the census being taken. But who was he? Why should we care and what can we learn from the Bible stories that include him as a key character in the life of Jesus?
He was a common man but God used him for an important mission. Can you imagine that God might use you for something important? Joseph was an honorable, compassionate, and godly man. He was willing to risk his own reputation in order to protect the young, pregnant Mary. An angel came to him in a dream with instructions from God about what was coming and what he was supposed to do. Joseph had to be wondering, “was I just dreaming, or was that really an angel last night?”
Has that ever happened to you? A profound, life-changing thought hits you and you’re left wondering, “was that God talking or did I just have too much pizza last night?” Joseph is an example for us on how God might use even us common people to play an important part in His big plan.
“Lord, I’m no carpenter and I’m not part of a famous family tree, but if you have something you want me to do, help me to be like Joseph.”
