I grew up pretty fast…height-wise anyway. I passed my dad when I was just 13. He was short and stout, and I was the family “bean pole.” My parents were proud of me and helped me grow, not just physically but also emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. They did their best to provide for me what I needed for that next step of life, but they never assumed (or let me presume) that just because I was taller than Dad that I was a grown up. I still had some growing to do, and I still do.
The church is all about growing people up, spiritually. Moving people from birth (new life in Christ), to growth and spiritual maturity. It’s not automatic or instantaneous but a growth process. It takes time and work.
Our goal is to become more-and-more Christlike. We have to grow into it.
This Sunday I will be speaking about that Growth Process of “Becoming Something Else.” Jesus accepts us just as we are, but he doesn’t leave us that way. He changes us from the inside out…IF we participate.
